El cuidado de la salud humana y del medio ambiente son unos de los principales desafíos que enfrenta la industria de la pintura. Por ello todos los esfuerzos apuntan a la síntesis y fabricación de productos amigables con el medio ambiente. Las pinturas anticorrosivas tradicionales contienen cromo, probadamente efectivo como pigmento inhibidor de la corrosión. Sin embargo, su fuerte carácter tóxico y contaminante condujo a la búsqueda de nuevas sustancias con menor impacto para la salud pública y el medio ambiente. El propósito de esta investigación fue la obtención de nuevos pigmentos anticorrosivos eficientes y no tóxicos. En este sentido es que se estudió el comportamiento de benzoatos metálicos tales como el de hierro, el de aluminio y el de cinc. La elección del benzoato se sustentó en sus propiedades electroquímicas y toxicológicas (el ácido benzoico y el benzoato de sodio son ampliamente utilizados como aditivos para la conservación de alimentos destinados al consumo humano), como así también en razones económicas pues es un producto industrial de bajo costo. La elección de los cationes se debió a su baja toxicidad y a que sus sales son relativamente económicas.
