Description

Particle size, structure, and density are three main factors known to affect sludge settling behavior in wastewater treatment. Floc size and structure (e.g. filament content) have received considerable attention, but biomass buoyant density has received less attention. This is possibly because bacterial density has generally been assumed to be invariable, and because currently available methods are largely inadequate for application in wastewater treatment laboratories. The objectives of this research were to develop a new, simple method of direct density measurement, investigate the relationship between density and sludge settleability in full scale samples, determine the relationships between density and factors such as MSP, NVSS, and chemical contents in biomass, and examine the effects of process characteristics (process type and operation) on biomass composition, density, and settleability, develop a model to describe settleability as a function of measured biomass characteristics, including density and floc shape characteristics, and suggest new strategies based on density control for settling improvements in full scale systems.
