Das Angebot an kostenfreien Webmail-Diensten in Deutschland ist vielfältig. Oft scheint deren Bedienung jedoch nicht intuitiv genug oder die Zusatzangebote werden als störend und somit „spaßmindernd“ empfunden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die User Experience der Dienste von web.de, gmx.de und gmail.com untersucht. Gestützt durch den „Leitfaden Usability“ der deutschen Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH wurde der Prozess des Usability Engineering in seinen Phasen auf die ausgewählte Software angepasst und durchgeführt. Durch Interviews der größten Zielgruppe wurde in Vorfeld ermittelt, welche Erwartungen der Nutzer an einen Webmail-Dienst stellt. Aus diesen Erwartungen erschlossen sich Nutzungsanforderungen an die Software. Die Anforderungen wurden in der Nutzung der Software mittels Usability-Testing im Labor (teilnehmende Beobachtung) abgeprüft. Das Benutzungserlebnis der einzelnen Probanden konnte durch eine Online-Software ermittelt werden. Alle Ergebnisse wurden schließlich in der Auswertung zu Handlungsempfehlungen zusammengefasst, welche den einzelnen Plattformen zur Optimierung dienen soll.
