Während die Frage nach der Wissenschaftlichkeit der historischen und philosophischen Disziplinen erst in der späten Neuzeit gestellt wurde und diese Auseinandersetzung bis in die Gegenwart anhält, musste sich die Theologie schon im Mittelalter dieser Problematik stellen. An den jungen Universitäten Europas des 12. Jahrhunderts mit den drei Fakultäten der Philosophie, Rechtswissenschaften und Medizin wurde die Frage nach der Wisssenschaftlichkeit der Theologie, welche an der vierten Fakultät gelehrt wurde, in Frage gestellt, sodass namhafte Magistri der Universitäten von Paris und Oxford sich dieser Thematik in besonderer Weise stellen mussten. Dabei wurde vor allem in den Prologen der Sententenzenkommentare, welche die wissenschaftlichen Befähigungsnachweise der angehenden Doktoren der Theologie darstellten, die wissenschaftstheoretischen Grundlagen der theologischen Disziplin in besonderer Weise konkretisiert und herausgearbeitet. Die in dieser vorliegenden Untersuchung behandelten Autoren wie Thomas von Aquin, Bonaventura, Alexander von Hales u.a. stimmen mit kleinen Nuancierungen vor allem darin überein, dass Theologie Wissenschaft und Weisheit sei.
