Description

The identification of the evil of the Ninevites in Jon 1:2 is one of the most difficult issues in the Scriptures that have bewildered Bible scholars for many years. What was this evil that "has come before me" as God ultimately informed Jonah? While some scholars suggest that it has to do with the "decadence and corruption" of the Ninevites, others say it was their "non-idolatrous and yet moral and social sins." Some while conjecturing that it was the "bold and open affront to God" of the Ninevites, others figure it out to be their "bloodshed, deceit, and robbery." While others consider that it was their "polytheism and idolatry," still others believe that it was their "atrocities, brutality, and arrogance."According to some this was their "evil plotting, cruelty, plunder, witchcraft, and exploitation," yet others presuppose that it was their "greed and adultery." Some scholars admit that it could hardly be determined at all. In this book Dr. Emmanuel S. Sansano examines the different scholarly thoughts, and proposes that this particular evil can be possibly identified by investigating and synchronizing the biblical and archaeological elements connected to the contexts of Jon 1.
