In der griechischen Mythologie übernahm der Zweikampftopos eine teils zentrale Rolle, wobei vor allem das Duell zwischen griechischem Heros und verfeindeter Amazone oftmals seine ausführliche Darstellung durch die antiken Autoren erfuhr. Neben seinem Eingang in die Schriftquellen schlug sich der Geschlechterkampf auch in der Ikonographie nieder, was uns durch zahlreiche erhaltene Vasenbilder und Reliefs zu dieser Thematik belegt wird. In der Vasenmalerei wurde dabei das Sujet des Zweikampfes sukzessive durch den Stütztopos verdrängt, bei dem der siegreiche Heros seine besiegte Gegnerin in den Armen hält und sich zunehmend der Liebe zu seiner Kontrahentin bewusst wird. Bereits in der Spätantike wurde vereinzelt mit der Konvention gebrochen, wonach der griechische Held stets als Sieger aus dem Geschlechterkampf hervorzugehen hat. Diese mythologische Verkehrung erfreute sich insbesondere in der neuzeitlichen Rezeption der Thematik großer Beliebtheit. In Heinrich von Kleists Penthesilea etwa erleidet Achilleus durch die in Raserei geratene Amazone und ihre Hundemeute einen grausamen Tod. Der Zweikampftopos hat bis heute kaum an Strahlkraft verloren.
