Wie erzählen Filme über das Erwachsenwerden? Die vorliegende Arbeit geht dieser Frage nach, um das noch wenig verstandene Genre Coming of Age aus der Sicht des Drehbuchautors zu beschreiben. Coming of Age, zu dem Filme wie 'Rebel Without a Cause', 'The Breakfast Club' oder 'Reality Bites' gehören, ist jünger als die klassischen Genres, jedoch mittlerweile von hoher Relevanz, wie der überraschende Erfolg von 'Juno' gezeigt hat. Seit Mitte der Neunziger entsteht auch eine beachtliche Anzahl hochwertiger deutschsprachiger Genrefilme, von 'Nach fünf im Urwald' über 'Im Juli' oder 'Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei' bis zu 'Berlin am Meer'. In einem Korpus aus 117 internationalen Filmen über die Selbstfindung junger Menschen entdeckt die Studie gemeinsame Themen, archetypische Figuren, übliche Settings, einen Vorrat an Plotmustern, typische audiovisuelle Gestaltungsmittel sowie einen ikonographischen Genrecode. In das Subgenre 'Reifeprüfung' (Prototyp: 'The Graduate') dringt das Buch vertiefend vor und findet darin u.a. eine gemeinsame Plotstruktur aus 16 Funktionen. Die Ergebnisse sind für Drehbuchautoren wie für Medienwissenschaftler gleichermaßen von Interesse.
