Description

The musical theatre of the twentieth century was essentially shaped by Kurt Weill (1900-1950), the most famous is his congenial collaboration with Bertolt Brecht, from which one of the most played operas in the world to this day: the Three Rose Opera. In 1933, the Jewish composer had to flee, first to France, in 1935 he then emigrated to the USA, where he could celebrate great success on Broadway. In this first comprehensive monograph, Stephen Hinton looks at Weill's development, his experiments with the most diverse genres and stylistic means - from one-act and plays with music to Broadway musical. There are "two weills" – the European and the American: Europe and America as the two poles of his life and work. Berlin becomes audible on Broadway and in Berlin, Paris, London, Kiev and elsewhere in Europe, an American-transformed Kurt Weill.
