Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) a écrit des centaines de textes (ou de fragments) sur la théorie théâtrale. Mais il en a fort peu publié et, à l'exception, notable, du Petit organon et de quelques brefs essais, il n'a pas laissé de traité en forme. Il reste que la pratique du dramaturge est inséparable chez lui de la réflexion sur le théâtre. Ainsi ne cesse-t-il d'approfondir et de reformuler - ses manuscrits en témoignent - l'ensemble des questions d'esthétique (imitation, illusion, proximité ou distance, rôle dévolu au public...) qui ont été débattues par ses grands prédécesseurs, Aristote, Diderot, Lessing, Hegel et Schiller... Ce faisant, il confronte ses thèses à celles de ses contemporains, Stanislavski au premier chef. En treize sections à la fois thématiques et chronologiques, ce volume rassemble l'ensemble des Ecrits sur le théâtre de Brecht, y compris - pour la première fois en langue française - ceux qui ont été récemment révélés par la dernière édition allemande de ses oeuvres complètes.
