Der Band bietet Studien zu repräsentativen Autoren aus 150 Jahren österreichischer Literaturgeschichte. Er beginnt mit Beiträgen zu Theaterstücken des 1801 in Wien geborenen Dramatikers Johann Nestroy und behandelt u.a. spezifische Probleme der Übertragung der Volksstücke des Österreichers ins Italienische. Enthalten sind auch Studien zu Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Rainer Maria Rilke, Stefan Zweig, Franz Werfel, Elias Canetti, Thomas Bernhard, Franz Innerhofer bis hin zu den frühen Prosawerken Christoph Ransmayrs. Alle Aufsätze sind komparatistisch angelegt und thematisieren unter anderem die Rezeption der behandelten Schriftsteller in Italien. Der Band erörtert darüber hinaus Fragen der Theatergeschichte und enthält unveröffentlichtes Quellenmaterial. Th e carefully selected works treated in this volume bring forth a new perspective on the infl uence of Italy on Austrian literature and vice versa.
