Globalisierung führt nicht zwangsläufig zur Durchsetzung profitorientierter Marktvergesellschaftung, moderner Sozialbeziehungen und der Demokratisierung des politischen Systems. Dies ist die überraschende Einsicht dieses Buchs, das am Beispiel des in verschiedene religiöse Gemeinschaften zersplitterten Libanons vor dem Hintergrund massiven Staatsversagens die sozialen Sicherungssysteme vier ausgewählter Gemeinschaften vergleicht. Ausgehend vom größten Anbieter sozialer Sicherung, der islamistischen Hizb Allah, werden andere schiitische Bewegungen, aber auch das Spektrum sozialer Sicherung innerhalb der maronitischen, sunnitischen und drusischen Gemeinschaft beleuchtet. Der Autorin gelingt es dabei am Beispiel des Politikfelds der Sozialpolitik zu zeigen, dass das Ergebnis des Eindringens «des Westens» nicht unbedingt Modernität und gesellschaftliche Moderne sind, sondern Anpassungsprozesse ausgelöst werden, in denen Elemente der Moderne zwar aufgenommen werden, die alten, auf Patronage und Klientelismus gegründeten, Machtstrukturen aber weiter bestehen.
