Der Bereich des Umweltschutzes stellt mittlerweile ein wichtiges Anwendungsgebiet fUr Verfahren der Informatik dar. Dies reicht von der Datenerfassung iiber die Datenhaltung bis hin zum eigentlichen und un erlliBlichen Verarbeitungsschritt. Typischerweise beruhen die erfolgreicheren Informatikanwendungen im Um weltbereich auf einer intensiven Kooperation mit Vertretern tangierter Fachgebiete. Die Verwendung von Informatik im Umweltschulz bei'iihrt einerseits eine Vielzahl von Gebieten und Methoden und macht andererseits aktuelle Defizite (nicht immer im wissenschaftlichen Bereich) offensichtlich. Die beriihrten Gebiete umfassen Disziplinen, die sich primlir der Informatik zurechnen lassen. Hierzu gehOren etwa die Gebiete der wissensbasierten Systeme und der Datenbanktechnik. Verfahren der Modellbildung und Simulation machen in groBem Umfang Anleihen auBerhalb der Informatik. Zu den Defiziten geh6rt eine oft zu beobachtende Diskrepanz zwischen ben6tigten und vorhandenen Daten. Den vieizitierten DatenfriedhOfen, deren Entstehung durch immer mehr Programme zur Datensammlung und durch immer mehr Sensoren begiinstigt wird, steht oft ein Fehlen relevanter Daten gegeniiber. Weitere Defizite bestehen hliufig im Fehlen von Konzepten bereits gelliufiger Begriffe; so ist etwa noch keine wirklich schliissige und vollstlindige Konzeption von Okobilanzen erkennbar. Uber manche dieser eher technisch (l6sbar) erscheinenden Aspekte hinaus sind die Grenzen von Informatikan wendungen im Umweltbereich trotz ihrer praktischen Relevanz noch weitgehend unbestimmt. Die inzwischen mehrjllhrige Arbeit an Umweltinformationssystemen hat zu einer Vielzahl von bereits be stehenden Systemen gefUhrt; dabei hat das Hauptgewicht auf der universitliren und beh6rdlichen Sicht gelegen.
