Dieses Buch ist aus Vorlesungen an den U niversitiiten Karlsruhe, Kaiserslautern und Passau hervorgegangen. Es wendet sich vornehmlich an Studenten der hoheren Semester der Fachrichtungen Elektrotechnik, Informatik und Wirtschaftswissenschaften, um ihnen eine Einfuhrung und eine wertende Ubersicht uber das Gebiet der Technologien und Geriite der Peripherie von Informationssystemen zu geben. In diesem Sinne war es die Aufgabe, dieses weite, stiindig expandierende und sich umschichtende Gebiet ubersichtlich und faBbar darzustellen. Mittel dazu waren eine starke Gliederung des Stoffes und die Beschriinkung auf die hier vorliegende Seitenzahl. Bei der Themenauswahl hatten zwei Gesichtspunkte Vorrang: Zum einen die Behandlung der grundlegenden physikalisch-technischen Vorgiinge, wobei angestrebt wurde, eine groBe Palette in ihren Grundzugen darzustelIen; zum anderen war es das Bestreben, die wirtschaftlich bedeutendsten Technologien und Geriite zu beschreiben, die schon heute einen bedeutenden Marktanteil besitzen oder aus der Sicht des Autors zukunftiges Potential versprechen. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen ist es verstiindlich, daB, um das Wesent liche herauszustelIen, manch interessante Entwicklung und mancher Nebengedanke nicht aufgenommen werden konnten. Auf eine mathematische oder formelmiiBige Behandlung des Stoffes wurde aus didaktischen Grunden weitgehend verzichtet. Eine oberfliichliche Erwiihnung erschien wenig sinnvolI, eine fundierte Behandlung hiitte den Rahmen dieses Buches gesprengt. Ausgedehnte Literaturangaben sollen den an einzelnen Gebieten tiefergehend interessierten Leser einen schnell en Einstieg ermoglichen. Fur Hinweise und Vorschliige zur Kor rektur und Ergiinzung ist der Autor jederzeit dankbar. Das hier angesprochene Gebiet der Peripherie von Informationssystemen ist nicht nur technisch aufgrund seiner Vielfalt auBerordentlich reizvoll, sondern es hat auch eine beachtliche wirtschaftliche Bedeutung."
