Die faszinierenden Erfolge der modernen Halbleiterelektronik, basie rend auf einkristallinem Silizium sowie den einkristallinen III-V -Halb leitern, haben den Blick so sehr auf sich gezogen, daB einige andere Entwicklungen auf dem Halbleitergebiet weniger B'eachtung fanden. Ge rade neuere Entwicklungen zeigen aber, daB auch diese Sektoren sich durchaus gesund weiterentwickeln mit wichtigen Nutz·ungsgebieten fUr die Elektronik, insbesondere im Bereich peripherer Systeme, wie Sensoren, Displays, Elektrophotographie oder aber bei Spezialaufga ben, wie der Thermoelektrik oder dem Uberspannungsschutz. Es er schien daher sinnvoll, die Buchreihe "Halbleiterelektronik" durch ei nen Band zu erganzen, der - ausgehend von den Eigenschaften dieser Sondermaterialien - deren Nutzung in der modernen Elektronik be schreibt. Wegen der Vielgestaltigkeit des Inhalts erschien es mir sinnvoll, die einzelnen Kapitel von den dort genannten Fachleuten gestalten zu las sen. Ich hoffe, daB es trotzdem gelungen ist, einen geschlossenen Uberblick zu geben, wobei aber auf die an einigen Stellen besonders enge Korrelation zum Band "Sensorik" dieser Reihe verwiesen sei. Die ersten Konzeptionen zu einem Buch tiber amorphe und polykristal line Halbleiter wurden noch zusammen mit Herrn Professor Dr. Herbert Weill erarbeitet, der im Marz 1981 tOdlich verungltickte. Unser aller Dank gilt ihm und seiner Initiative.
