Sie beruht immer auf Aus wahl, sie zeichnet den von ihr gewahlten Wirklichkeitsausschnitt mit Hilfe der von ihr konstruierten Modelle nach, macht damit Wirklichkeit, indem sie sie urn viele Einzel heiten reduziert, gedanklich hantierbar, urn so ihrem Zweck zu dienen (vgl. ]. Mittel strap, 1972, S. 135 ff. ). Das erstere vollzieht sich nach weitgehend anerkannten Regeln: Die Modellkonstruktion, die thematische Auswahl, die Zuordnung von Wirklichkeits befunden zum Modell sollen nachvoIlziehbar und damit nachpriifbar erfolgen; die Be wertungen sollen so offenkundig sein, daB jedermann ohne Miihe entscheiden kann, ob er sie iibernehmen will oder nicht. Der Zweck solchen Tuns wird dagegen von sehr unterschiedlichen Auffassungen bestimmt: Man kann sich mit einer ,richtigep. ' Reduk tion von Wirklichkeit begniigen, man kann Wirklichkeit untersuchen, urn einzelne Ent wicklungen zu erklaren oder urn Gesetzlichkeiten der Wirklichkeit zu erkennen, was dann kiinftige Entwicklungen ggf. prognostizierbar macht, und man kann Wirklichkeit schlieBlich erforschen, urn sie zu verandern. In Zusammenhang mit unserem Thema bedeutet dies notwendigerweise, daB man entweder das System ,immanent' verbessern oder aber es mehr oder weniger grundlegend verandern wilF. Die Verbindung der zwei ten mit der ersten Stufe wird dabei zum zentralen wissenschaftstheoretischen Problem: Wer (nur) verbessern und wer (grundlegend) verandern will, laBt unterschiedliche Pra missen in sein analytisches Verfahren eingehen.
