Auf breiter Quellengrundlage untersucht Rüdiger Graf die Zukunftsvorstellungen im gesamten politischen und intellektuellen Spektrum und zeigt, dass sich diese durch einen hohen Gestaltungsoptimismus, das weit verbreitete Bewusstsein, an einer Zeitenwende zu leben, sowie den Willen zur "Tat" auszeichneten. So arbeitet er die Grundlagen eines die Lager übergreifenden Konsenses heraus, auf dessen Basis die harten Auseinandersetzungen der Weimarer Republik erst entstanden. Grafs Analyse lässt die "Krisenjahre der klassischen Moderne" in neuem Licht erscheinen.
