Das Deutsche Historische Institut in Rom legt als ersten Band (RPG IV) einer neuen Reihe die Regesten der Pönitentiarie vor, welche im Pontifikat Pius` II. (1458-64) eingereicht wurden (siehe Verlagsankündigung 1995/II, SD. 60). Die Bearbeiter haben in dem vorliegenden Band eine erste Analyse der 4028 Bittschriften vorgenommen, bei denen es um eine Vielzahl von Absolutionen, Dispensen und Lizenzen geht: Ehedispense, Geburtsmakeldispense, gewaltsame Übergriffe gegen Geistliche und Totschlag von Klerikern, Pilgererlaubnis, die Gewährung persönlicher Beichtväter etc. Ferner werden der Geschäftsgang der Pönitentiarie untersucht und der Ablauf der Gnadenerteilung dargestellt, von der Einreichung der Supplik bis hin zur Registrierung und zur Littera (Bescheid) für den Petenten. Gerade hier wird ein neues Licht auf die große administrative Kompetenz der römischen Kurie geworfen und die Person des großen Humanistenpapstes auch unter dem Aspekt seines pastoralen Engagements gewürdigt.
