Seitdem der einst prominente Realist Friedrich Spielhagen (1829-1911) schon zu Lebzeiten entkanonisiert wurde, konzentriert sich das Interesse auf die mit Besessenheit propagierte "objektive" Erzäauml;hltheorie oder die ersten Romane bis zu »Sturmflut« (1877), als er noch ein Vierteljahrhundert von oppositionellen und satirischen Erzählwerken vor sich hatte. Diese Studie berüuuml;cksichtigt die ganze Laufbahn, läßt aber die theoretischen Bemühungen weitgehend beiseite, um die späteren Romane zu akzentuieren, in denen er das Wilhelminische Reich an seinen aus dem Vormärz geretteten Idealen von Freiheit und Demokratie mißt, während er sich auf die Sozialdemokratie und den Zolaschen Realismus zubewegt.
