Die mit der Spätantike beginnende Tradition christlicher Dichtung wird in der europäischen Aufklärung um eine eigentümliche Variante bereichert. Mit dem aufsehenerregenden Erscheinen des Bibel-Epos "Der Messias" (1748) stellt Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock sein Projekt einer "Heiligen Poesie" vor, die auf eine neue - und literaturgeschichtlich folgenreiche - Weise Dichtung als Offenbarung verstehen will. Die vorliegende Studie rekonstruiert Entstehungsbedingungen, Begriff und Funktion dieses Versuchs, in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit der zeitgenössischen Poetologie, pietistischer Theologie und rationalistischer Philosophie, Religion und Dichtung noch einmal durch eine hochreflektierte Sprachkunst zu vermitteln. Dabei zeigt sich, daß die aufgeklärte Sensibilität für die Eigenart der poetischen Sprache, die sich in den poetologischen Diskussionen, in der Reflexion der rhetorischen Traditionen, aber auch etwa in dem Interesse an der entstehenden philosophischen Ästhetik Alexander Gottlieb Baumgartens abzeichnet, produktiv gegen die sprach- und kunstkritischen Traditionen christlich-protestantischer Prägung ausgespielt werden kann. Doch führen andererseits die theologischen Implikationen des christlichen Sujets auch an die Grenzen literarischer Darstellbarkeit. Ihre Unvollkommenheit ist den Texten der "Heiligen Poesie" eingeschrieben, so daß in den zeitgenössisch-rationalistischen Darstellungsoptimismus eine Skepsis einzieht, die auf überraschende Weise die "Heilige Poesie" als Vorhut der ästhetischen Moderne erscheinen läßt.
