Bis zum Auftreten des Islam im 7. Jh. war der grosste Teil des Nahen Ostens christlich. Das Verbreitungsgebiet der verschiedenen orientalischen Kirchen reichte von Athiopien bis zum Kaukasus und vom Mittelmeer bis nach Sudindien, Innerasien und China. Durch die sturmische Ausbreitung des Islam, die verheerenden Mongolenzuge (12./13. Jh.) und andere Grunde verlor das orientalische Christentum im Laufe der Jahrhunderte viele Anhanger. Doch behaupten sich die einzelnen Kirchen im Orient auch heute noch, meist als religiose Minderheiten; viele Glaubige haben inzwischen ihre alte Heimat verlassen und leben in aller Welt. Sie alle halten treu am uberlieferten Glauben und an der angestammten Liturgie fest. Konfession und Nationalitatsbewusstsein sind bei ihnen eng verbunden. Das "Kleine Lexikon des Christlichen Orients", dessen erste Auflage 1975 als "Kleines Worterbuch des Christlichen Orients" erschien, will das Wissen uber dieses orientalische Christentum von den Anfangen bis zur Gegenwart in ubersichtlicher Form darbieten. Die Neuauflage ist stark uberarbeitet und aktualisiert. Ausfuhrliche Literaturangaben ermoglichen tieferes Eindringen in die Materie.
