L'art de l'Orient chrétien s'est épanoui à partir du IVe siècle dans un espace qui recouvre la Géorgie, l'Arménie, la Cappadoce, la Syrie, le Liban, Israël (l'ancienne Palestine), l'Egypte copte, la Nubie et l'Ethiopie. Ces territoires, où la chrétienté est née, bénéficiaient d'un réseau d'églises et de monastères (du Ve au VXe siècle) exceptionnellement dense et précoce, dont les neuf dixièmes sinon davantage ont disparu. Ces édifices étaient décorés de fresques et de sculptures, ornés d'icônes et d'objets liturgiques, et renfermaient d'exceptionnels manuscrits enluminés. Les recherches de l'auteur ont permis de définir l'originalité de cette iconographie orientale, sa cohérence, son rapport avec les doctrines religieuses et les croyances des peuples concernés. Elle montre que ces régions, qui faisaient partie de l'ère d'influence byzantine, ont constitué une entité à part, en termes d'art et d'iconographie, notamment influencée par l'Egypte pharaonique et la Perse. Cet ouvrage capital est nécessaire pour comprendre les conséquences des destructions actuelles. Il s'agit, ni plus ni moins, de la disparition, entre l'Occident et Byzance, d'une troisième tradition artistique du monde chrétien.
