Jahrhunderts fur die Entwicklung des Russlandischen Reiches zu einem Imperium: Es ist das Jahrhundert, in dem sich die Kluft zwischen einem Imperium als analytischer Erkenntnis und einem solchen als Quellenkategorie schliesst. In dieser Zeitspanne, eingerahmt von der Zarenherrschaft Peters I. und Katharinas II., vollzog sich durch die Ubernahme des zunachst dichotomischen Konzepts von Zivilisiertheit und Barbarei aus dem 'westlichen Europa ein tiefgreifender Wandel tradierter Denkweisen und Praktiken der russlandischen Elite, der erst jetzt in der Herausbildung eines umfassenden imperialen Bewusstseins resultierte.Dabei wird gezeigt, dass von einem exklusiven 'Sonderweg' des Zarenreiches im 18. Jahrhundert keine Rede sein kann. Vielmehr offenbaren Diskurse und Praktiken der Zivilisierung, Akkulturierung und Assimilierung zahlreiche Parallelen zu Denkweisen und zum Verhalten anderer europaischer Kolonialreiche. Als russlandische Spezifika wird der fruhe Ursprung der russlandischen Assimilationsidee herausgearbeitet, deren verhaltnismassig spate Koppelung an eine russlandische Zivilisierungsabsicht und die Grunde, warum trotz des Wandels von Konzepten und Praktiken das ganze 18.
