Der Bauernkrieg ist untrennbar mit der Reformation verbunden. Der vom Sudwesten des Reiches ausgehende Aufstand breitete sich wie ein Flachenbrand aus und erreichte in Thuringen mit der Schlacht bei Frankenhausen im Mai 1525 seinen Hohepunkt. Die Ursachen der Revolte sind regional und standespezifisch sehr unterschiedlich. Unzweifelhaft ist jedoch, dass die mittels Flugschriften kursierenden Vorstellungen von einer 'besseren Welt' immer starkeren Anklang in den landlichen und stadtischen Milieus fanden. Vielfaltig waren die offentlich gefuhrten Kontroversen zu Fragen von sozialer Gerechtigkeit, religioser Erneuerung und autonomer Selbstbestimmung. Diese Aspekte werden im vorliegenden Band thematisiert. Zugleich problematisiert er die sozialen, okonomischen und politischen Verhaltnisse im thuringisch-mitteldeutschen Raum zur Zeit des Bauernkrieges.
