Die Reformation besaß ein gesellschaftsveränderndes Potential mit vielen Facetten. Eine der schillerndsten zeigt die Lebensformen derjenigen Frauen und Männer, die sich weder an Konzepte der altgläubigen Obrigkeit noch an Richtlinien der Reformatoren halten wollten. Zu diesen Nonkonformisten zählten die Täufer, deren Lebenserfahrungen in dieser Untersuchung rekonstruiert werden. Der alltagsgeschichtliche Ansatz, gestützt von einer breiten Quellenüberlieferung, gibt Einblicke in die besonderen Lebensverhältnisse der Dissidenten des 16. Jahrhunderts und veranschaulicht damit ebenfalls die Ordnung der Mehrheitsgesellschaft. Der Alltag der Täufer macht deutlich, daß ihr Leben nicht nur Alternative im Kontext der Zeitumstände, sondern in gewisser Weise auch historische Alternative war.
