Hat der Adel in Sachsen durch die starke Territorialmacht der Wettiner, durch die Einflusse der Reformation oder durch gunstige wirtschaftliche Standortfaktoren besondere Pragungen erfahren? Mit einem breiten Spektrum an Bild- und Schriftquellen veranschaulicht dieser reich bebilderte Band uber 700 Jahre Geschichte des sachsischen Adels. Beschrieben werden die Lebenswelten zahlreicher Adelsfamilien wie u. a. derer von Bunau, von Schonberg, von Gersdorff, von Friesen, von Schleinitz, von Einsiedel, von Minckwitz oder von Carlowitz. Ihre Vertreter traten nicht nur als Abte oder Bischofe hervor, sondern auch als Geheime Rate, Berghauptleute und Landtagsprasidenten, als Diplomaten und Generale, als Gelehrte, Maler und Dichter, als Rittergutsbesitzer und Unternehmer. In viele dieser Bereiche sind adlige Frauen gleichermassen vorgedrungen. Anhand von Testamenten, Leichenpredigten, Briefen, Familienordnungen, Bestallungsakten, Fotografien oder Zeugnissen aus Kunst und Literatur werden Aspekte sachsischer Adelskultur beschrieben und in den Gesamtzusammenhang der modernen Adelsforschung eingeordnet.
