A bipoláris világrend kialakulásával, a sport is a nemzetközi konfliktusok megvívásának egyik preferált színtere lett. A szocialista Magyarországon az 1980-as években, elsősorban az olimpiai játékok kapcsán merültek fel politikai megfontolásokat igénylő kérdések, a döntésekre azonban a Szovjetuniótól való függőségi viszony volt hatással. A korszak nyári olimpiai játékaival összefüggő magyar dilemmák és döntéshozatali mechanizmusok, a sport és politikai szervezetek tevékenysége, a sajtó és a személyes visszaemlékezések alapján rekonstruálhatók. A hidegháborúban az olimpia, így a magyar sport is a nagypolitikai csatározások áldozatául esett, hamvaiból azonban sikerült feltámadnia, hiszen a világ nagyhatalmainak vezetői is ráébredtek arra, hogy a nemzetközi politikai ellentéteket máshol kell megoldani. 1989-90-ben a rendszerváltozások révén új keretek, és lehetőségek nyíltak a nemzetközi sportkapcsolatok bonyolítására, és bebizonyosodott, hogy a sport eszköze lehet a népek közeledésének is, hozzájárulhat az országok elismeréséhez, a megosztott nemzetek újraegyesítéséhez, és az önállósodó nemzetállamok politikai elismertetéséhez.
