Description

This book integrates the different prospective, scientific and practical experience of researchers as well as beneficiaries and stakeholders in the field of forest conservation in Southeast Europe. The book stresses the importance of improving the adaptability of these ecosystems to the impacts of climate change. Gathered around a common idea, the book presents the latest results in forest genetic resources conservation at national and regional level.  The chapters are written by experts from: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia. The book presents the current state, legal and institutional framework for conservation and management of forest genetic resources, case studies and best practices in the application of different conservation methods and techniques (in situ and ex situ) as well as climate change aspects in this area. This book will be of particular interest to scientists and experts in the field of forestry, environmental protection and rural development, bachelor, master and doctoral students, as well as for anyone interested in the conservation issues fuelled by ethical and economic motives. About the Author Prof. dr. Mirjana Šijačić-Nikolić is a Full Professor in the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Forestry, Republic of Serbia. She published more than 300 scientific papers related to genetics of forest trees, plants breeding, conservation and sustainable utilization of forest genetic resources and plant production.  She co-authored the university textbook Conservation and Directed Utilization of Forest Genetic Resources and numerous chapters in national and international books published by Springer and CRC Press. Prof. dr Jelena Milovanović is a Full professor in the Singidunum University in Belgrade, Republic of Serbia, Study Program Environment and Sustainable Development. She has been involved in forest genetic resources conservation and climate change challenges research since 2005 and she has made significant scientific and expert achievements in this field. She is author of many journal articles, chapters and books on forest genetic resources, conservation issues and environmental protection, including chapters in other Springer series, and participates as an expert in many international and national projects. She co-authored the university textbook Conservation and Directed Utilization of Forest Genetic Resources. Dr. Marina Nonić is an Assistant Professor at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Forestry, Republic of Serbia. She is currently engaged on different subjects, including Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Forest Genetics Resources. Her scientific work has been mainly focused on forest genetics, plant breeding and conservation of forest genetics resources, as well as plant production. Dr. Marina Nonić is author/co-author of more than 60 scientific journal and conference papers, including two chapters in books published by Springer and CRC Press. She participates in different scientific projects on forest genetics and conservation issues and she got two grants for scientific trainings in this field, within international projects in Italy and Austria.
