Description
Product Description This book considers the environmental policies that the EU employs outside its borders. Using a systematic and coherent approach to cover a range of EU activities, environmental issues, and geographical areas, it charts the EU’s attempts to shape environmental governance beyond its borders. Key questions addressed include: What environmental norms, rules and policies does the EU seek to promote outside its territory? What types of activities does the EU engage in to pursue these objectives? How successful is the EU in achieving its external environmental policy objectives? What factors explain the degree to which the EU attains its goals? The book will be of interest to students and academics as well as practitioners in governments (both inside and outside of the EU), the EU institutions, think tanks, and research institutes. Review “The European Union is widely acknowledged to be a leader in global environmental policy, but how exactly does bring its influence to bear beyond its borders? The path-breaking scholarship in this book represents the first serious attempt to capture the sheer range and complexity of the EU’s external policy as it reaches within other societies. Rich in detail and insight it will remain an important point of reference.” (Professor John Vogler, Keele University UK) “This very closely edited volume makes the very first systematic attempt to catalogue and explain the EU’s efforts to shape environmental quality well beyond its own borders. By bringing together leading experts on specific instruments, issues and geographical areas of influence in a unique and insightful way, it opens up a whole new perspective on the way that the EU is thought about in international affairs.” (Professor Andrew J Jordan, University of East Anglia, UK) “The EU plays a critically important role in shaping global environmental policies but too much writing on the subject is self-congratulatory. This book offers a systematic and critical assessment of the effectiveness of EU external policy. It deserves to be read widely.” (Dr. Robert Falkner, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK) From the Back Cover This book considers the environmental policies that the EU employs outside its borders.
