Die Festtagskalender im Pentateuch stehen seit Beginn der kritischen Bibelforschung in deren Zentrum. Man ging davon aus, dass jeder der Kalender in seinem spezifischen historischen Kontext entstanden war und deshalb eine bestimmte Phase der Entwicklung der kultischen und sozialen Institutionen Israels exakt darstellte. Klassische Hypothesen verwendeten die Kalender, um die verschiedenen Rechts-Kodizes im Pentateuch voneinander zu unterscheiden, die ursprünglichen Entstehungsformen zu definieren und sie in einer historischen, chronologischen Folge in Beziehung zu einander zu setzen. Shimon Gesundheit hinterfragt diese klassischen historischen Rekonstruktionen und die Methode, die hinter ihnen steht. Er stellt eine andere Perspektive vor, aus der die Festtagsgesetze nicht einfach bestimmte kultische und soziale Realitäten tatsächlicher historischer Perioden widergeben. Sie formen vielmehr durch ihre Rechtsdiskurse neue Ideen und machen diese mit Hilfe von Textrevision und -redaktion im lemmatischen Stil des Midrasch geltend. Damit verkörpern sie als Gruppe den Prozess einer progressiven literarischen Entwicklung.
