Eusebius von Cäsarea (ca. 265-340) ist der erste Autor, der den gesamten Psalter Vers für Vers in einem zusammenhängenden Kommentar auslegte. Das umfangreiche Werk bildete für Jahrhunderte die wissenschaftliche Basis der Psalmenkommentierung. Es wird in der Reihe der „Griechischen Christlichen Schriftsteller" erstmals in drei Bänden kritisch ediert. Zu Ps 101-150 sind nur mehr Fragmente in Katenen erhalten. Sie waren bisher unzulänglich und mit reichlich Fremdmaterial vermengt von B. Montfaucon (1706) und A. Mai (1847), nachgedruckt in den Bänden 23 und 24 der Patrologia Graeca, sowie von J. B. Pitra (1883) herausgegeben worden. Der dritte Band wertet mit der sogenannten Palästinischen Katene (6. Jh.) und der Psalmenkatene des Niketas von Herakleia (spätes 11. Jh.) Überlieferungen aus, die in den alten Editionen unberücksichtigt geblieben waren. So bietet die vorliegende Sammlung gegenüber den bekannten Bruchstücken nicht nur einen fundierten kritischen Text, sondern erweitert ihn mit sehr vielen bislang unbekannten Partien.
