Zwei Krisenmomente des europäischen Spätmittelalters stehen im Zentrum des Buches: der sogenannte „Mongolensturm" (1241) und der „Fall Konstantinopels" (1453). Diese Geschehnisse brüskierten lateinische Weltvorstellungen und Geschichtserwartungen: Die Mongolen zerstörten den Traum der kreuzfahrenden Lateiner von einer vollständigen Christianisierung der Welt unter Führung Roms. An den Höfen und Universitäten und in den Klöstern Europas wurde über Herkunft, Identität und heilsgeschichtliche Bedeutung der Eroberer spekuliert. Die Osmanen eroberten mit Konstantinopel die Stadt, die als Erbin des letzten Weltreichs auf Erden angesehen wurde. Ihr Untergang weckte akute Endzeiterwartungen und stellte die christliche Historiografie und Theologie insbesondere in Bezug auf die heilsgeschichtliche Deutung der Osmanen vor neue Herauforderungen. Wie diese Geschehnisse erzählt, gedeutet und bewältigt wurden, untersucht Juliane Schiel an dominikanischen Zeugnissen: Briefe, Chroniken, Traktate, Reden und Predigten.
