Description

The architect Marcel Breuer (1902-1981), one of the central protagonists of the Bauhaus, built a monastery complex for the Baldegger sisters in the Swiss canton of Lucerne in the 1960s and 1970s. The mother house Sonnhalde is one of the most important sacred buildings of modern times in Switzerland, but is little known even in specialist circles. Breuer's design impresses with its concise volume, careful concrete and stone design, the inclusion of prefabricated concrete elements and the high-quality interior. This book comprehensively acknowledges and documents an architectural pioneering achievement in a monastic context. Particular attention is paid to the interplay of architecture and the lived spirituality of the sisters, the furniture also designed by Breuer and the entire artistic equipment. In addition to the creation and construction history, the community of the Baldegger sisters is also depicted with their history, life and prayer in this outstanding architectural monument of the 20th century. The volume is richly illustrated with historical, first published photographs from the construction period as well as a newly created image essay by Jürgen Beck. In addition, there is a wide range of illustrations of partly previously unpublished original plans and drawings from the archive of the monastery and the estate of Marcel Breuer, as well as a touching picture series of Sister Marie-Ruth Ziegler, which shows the life of the sisters in their religious practices, but also in everyday life. The result is a multi-layered and surprising picture narrative about architecture and life in the monastery, about an unknown magical place.
