Diese Festschrift ehrt den eminenten Literaturvermittler zwischen Deutschland und China Prof. Dr. h.c. Zhang Yushu. Unter dem konfuzianischen Freundschaftsmotto vereinigt der Band kulturwissenschaftliche, linguistische und literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge aus China, Deutschland, Japan und Korea und zeugt vom Gelingen eines internationalen Forschungsaustausches. Der Jubilar studierte Germanistik an der Peking-Universität, wo er seit 1978 als Dozent und von 1985 bis 2004 als Ordinarius unterrichtete. Seit 1979 führten ihn wiederholt längere Delegations- und Forschungsaufenthalte nach Deutschland, u. a. 1991 bis 1993 auf Einladung der Humboldt-Stiftung als Gastordinarius an die Universität Bayreuth. Als Kuratoriumsmitglied des Deutsch-ostasiatischen Wissenschaftsforums von Baden-Württemberg und als Organisator zahlreicher internationaler Symposien trug er wesentlich zum Kulturaustausch - auch zwischen asiatischen Staaten - bei. 2002 wurde er zum Ehrendoktor der Universität Tübingen ernannt. Für sein Mutterland hat er höchste Verdienste als Übersetzer wie als Herausgeber und Forscher erlangt, u. a. mit dem Briefwechsel Goethe/Schiller, den Schillerschen Dramen, der Lyrik von Droste-Hülshoff und Heine, Heines Prosaschriften, Schnitzlers Novellen und den Romanen Stefan Zweigs. Dank seiner Initiative entwickelte sich das 2000 von ihm gegründete Jahrbuch Literaturstraße. Chinesisch-deutsches Jahrbuch für Sprache, Literatur und Kultur zu einem lebendigen Forum internationaler und interdisziplinärer Verständigung. Der Band umfaßt Beiträge zur auf China bezogenen Philosophie und Poetik, zur modernen deutschen, japanischen und koreanischen Literatur und ihren Rezeptionsprozessen von der Tang-Zeit bis zur Gegenwart.
