Les éditions illustrées du Roland furieux ont contribué de façon décisive à faire du poème de l’Arioste un des « grands codes » de l’imaginaire européen du XVIe au XIXe siècle. Parmi elles, celle qu’imprima en 1584 à Venise Francesco De Franceschi marque un tournant dans l’iconographie de l’Orlando furioso parce qu’il s’agit de la première édition ornée de planches gravées sur cuivre, et non plus sur bois, et parce que son influence se fit sentir bien au-delà du VIXe siècle, et bien au-delà de l’Italie, sur toute l’illustration de la poésie épique. Les meilleurs spécialistes internationaux de l’Arioste illustré se sont rassemblés en 2011 à l’université de Caen-Basse Normandie pour mettre pour la première fois en pleine lumière l’édition De Franceschi et mieux en comprendre l’importance dans la longue histoire des éditions illustrées du Roland furieux, des premiers graveurs vénitiens jusqu’à Gustave Doré. Le volume issu de leurs travaux constitue une véritable somme, organiquement conçue, qui passionnera tous ceux qui s’intéressent à l’espace visuel du livre illustré.
