Description

The book addresses security threats and challenges to the European Union emanating from its eastern neighbourhood. The volume includes the expertise of policy and scholarly contributors coming from North America, Russia and Central Asia, and from across the EU. Themes and issues include the EU’s capacities and actorness, support from the United States, challenges from Russia, and a range of case studies including Ukraine, other post-Soviet conflicts, the Kurdish question, Central Asia, and terrorism and counter-terrorism.  Authors identify current threats and place these challenges into necessary historical context. They offer long-term recommendations for actionable goals to achieve greater stability in this complex and volatile region. This work is explanatory and long-lasting, and will engage readers in the limits and possibilities of the EU in a challenging era and in its most vital and demanding geographic arena. Review “In this excellent and timely book, the contributors, led by Rick Fawn, thoughtfully identify and effectively dissect key issues regarding security challenges faced by and perceived as urgent by the EU’s eastern neighbours. This work is wide-ranging geographically and thematically and in their careful analyses the contributors impressively meld theory and practice that all should prompt important questions and discussion.” (Aurel Braun, Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the University of Toronto and an Associate of the Davis Center at Harvard) “The book presents insightful and timely reflections on the EU as a global actor with a focus on the Eastern neighbourhood. Ten years have passed since the conception of Eastern Partnership and challenges facing both the EU and the EaP countries have been increasing and multiplying. This requires adequate responses, a clear vision and determination from all actors involved, the EU especially. The contributors to the volume cover wide ranging set of issues and offer analaysis that should be read by policy-makers and interested academics alike.” (Dr. Natalie Sabanadze, Georgia’s Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg, Head of Mission to the EU) From the Back Cover The book addresses security threats and challenges to the European Union emanating from its eastern neighbourhood.
