This book presents central problems in the design, research and maintenance of large-size mining machines for open pits, mobile earth-moving machinery, hydraulic hammers for mining and civil engineering, and screening processes for bulk materials. The first few chapters of the book deal with specific problems that frequently occur in machinery for open-pit mining. They focus on the resilience of large-size mining machines, degradation of steels used for supporting structures, and modelling of large-size rotary joints, as well as the noise hazards in connection with degradation processes. About the Author Marek Sokolski, Ph.D., D.Sc., Eng., is an academic educator and researcher with over 40 years of experience. He received his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. His scientific and educational interests mainly concern mining machinery, heavy-duty machines, materials handling, machine condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, and reliability. His scientific achievements include more than 90 articles, conference papers and book chapters, and over 120 reports for industry. In addition, he holds lectures, seminars and laboratory classes on the following subjects: “Mining Machines”, “Earth-Moving Machinery”, “Materials Handling”, “Machine Condition Monitoring”, “Modelling of Machines Dynamics” and “Engineering Statistics”. The author of four academic textbooks, he holds research fellowships at the Technische Universiteit Delft (Netherlands) and University of Stuttgart (Germany).
