Malgré des découvertes récentes et un intérêt croissant, la langue gauloise reste très imparfaitement comprise. L’un des moyens fondamentaux par lesquels nous avons accès à cette langue importante pour la compréhension de l’histoire des langues celtiques, et au-delà de la famille indo-européenne, est le corpus des noms propres attestés dans des sources multiples. Xavier Delamarre, dont les publications sont considérées dans les milieux universitaires comme les plus avancées dans la compréhension du gaulois, publie le deuxième volume de son Dictionnaire des thèmes nominaux du gaulois, Lab-~/~Xantus, qui achève la présentation du corpus des thèmes nominaux que l’on peut restituer grâce à l’onomastique de cette langue de l’antiquité. Ce volume est pourvu d’annexes nombreuses qui résument les traductions probables ou possibles des différents noms propres attestés : noms de dieux, noms de peuples, noms de personnes, noms de lieux et de rivières. Des index des différentes langues celtiques et indo-européennes permettront aux linguistes, celtisants et étymologistes de retrouver les thèmes apparentés du gaulois.
