Fruit d'un long travail de recherches et de réflexion, cet ouvrage est une reconstitution de la religion des Celtes et des Gallo-romains. Trois acquisitions nouvelles ont permis de réaliser une synthèse aussi complète que possible des traditions dont la continuité unit les temps de la protohistoire à l'histoire de la Gaule après la conquête romaine : une détermination précise du fonds préceltique ; la lecture et l'interprétation du symbolisme de l'art celtique ; la découverte de la mythologie celtique, telle qu'elle a pu être précisée à travers les représentations du chaudron de Guendestrup, confrontées avec les images des bas-reliefs religieux gallo-romains. Cette synthèse nous permet maintenant de réinterpréter les principaux textes de l'Antiquité grecque et romaine concernant la religion gauloise, de jalonner l'évolution religieuse, depuis l'époque de l'Indépendance jusqu'à la fin de la période romaine, de donner une description mieux documentée des divinités du panthéon gallo-romain. On s'apercevra, chemin faisant, que les traditions celtiques, si haut qu'elles remontent dans le temps, ne sont pas mortes. Elles subsistent dans certaines expressions, certaines coutumes collectives ou familiales, certaines cérémonies et certains usages saisonniers. Ceux-ci se répètent annuellement au moment des fêtes de Noël, du Carnaval, de la Mi-Carême, de Mai, de l'été, de la Toussaint, dans les campagnes comme dans les villes. Il s'agit là d'un fonds culturel commun à l'Europe occidentale et méridionale : France, Allemagne, Suisse, Angleterre, Italie, Espagne, Autriche, Pays Scandinaves.
