En inscrivant Meknès sur les registres du Patrimoine Mondial de l'humanité, les arbitres de L'UNESCO avaient en tête le formidable ossuaire de murailles et de palais que la ville doit au règne du Sultan Moulay Ismaïl. Mais ils embaumaient du même coup l'antidote de cet urbanisme despotique : une certaine douceur de vivre, faite de mélancolie, de tolérance et de scepticisme, qui est celle des habitants de Meknès. Ce livre - le premier d'une telle ampleur entièrement consacré a la ville et à son environnement culturel - oscille entre ces deux pôles : il cherche à rendre compte d'un patrimoine, et tente de faire un portrait moral. Meknès, qui au fil des siècles a su s'enrichir de ses " affluents " romains, berbères, juifs, chrétiens et français, y apparaît ainsi comme l'une des cités les plus attachantes et les plus équilibrées du Maroc. Elle est, pour reprendre un mot de ce siècle qui l'a tant marquée, une ville " honnête homme ", une ville qui, précisément parce qu'elle ne se pique ni d'être la plus riche, ni d'être la plus belle, surprend par l'importance et de ses richesses et de sa beauté. About the Author Francis Ramirez et Christian Rolot, maître de conférences à la Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris III et professeur à l'université Montpellier III, ont enseigné durant six ans à la Faculté des Lettres de Mekhnès. Comptant parmi les meilleurs connaisseurs des arts traditionnels du Maroc, ils ont publié aux éditions ACR : Tapis et Tissages du Maroc, une écriture du silence (1995), Arts et traditions du Maroc, introduction à l'esthétique des arts traditionnels (1998), Jean Cocteau, l'œil architecte (2000), et Bijoux du Maroc, la beauté des diables.
