Utilisé dès l'Antiquité pour l'architecture et la sculpture, le marbre est également employé depuis Louis XIV pour l'ornementation de meubles d'ébénisterie. La grande variété de ses coloris et la structure hétérogène de sa roche rendent cependant difficile l'identification des différents types de marbres, qu'ils soient anciens ou récents. Pour faciliter leur reconnaissance à des fins d'expertise ou de restauration, ce beau livre de référence propose plus de 150 échantillons représentatifs de la carrière dont ils sont extraits. Véritable bible du marbre, il met en valeur une grande variété de structures de roche (brèches, griottes, concrétionnés, marbres veinés, brocatelles, lumachelles ou coquillés, marbres unicolores ou cristallins) et de nuances de couleurs, allant des marbres blancs aux marbres noirs, en passant par les roses, les verts et les rouges.
