Pierres gravées en relief ou en creux, camées et intailles incarnent l'évolution de la gravure en miniature. Elles offrent une étonnante traversée de l'histoire humaine et minéralogique : du sceau de l'empereur romain aux amulettes des guerriers antiques, de la prière gravée au doigt du croyant du Moyen Âge à la bague de mariage, elles sont à la fois publiques et intimes, objets de parure et de collection. Changeant souvent de montures, copiées à de multiples exemplaires pour les plus célèbres d'entre elles, les pierres gravées sont particulièrement difficiles à dater ou à identifier. Elles n'en ont pas moins fasciné les hommes à toutes les époques. Les Romains épris d'art grec, l'homme de la Renaissance s'attachant à faire revivre l'Antique, les voyageurs du Grand Tour et les amateurs néoclassiques du xixe siècle, tous ont recherché et collectionné avec passion ces pierres de mémoire.
