Description
Yoshitoshi fut le plus prolifique et le plus marquant des maîtres de l'estampe japonaise à l'ère Meiji. Cet ouvrage présente son chef-d'oeuvre, les "Cent aspects de la lune" (Tsuki hyakushi), une série commencée en 1885 et terminée juste avant la mort de l'artiste en 1892. En son temps déjà, chaque nouvelle estampe publiée était un évènement, les tirages s'épuisant bien souvent dès le matin de leur parution. Cet ensemble rare, inspiré de récits historiques ou légendaires, est chargé de paradoxes. Tout en perpétuant la tradition nationale, Yoshitoshi inventait un style nouveau, largement inspiré de l'Occident. En un temps où les moyens de reproduction de masse -photographie, lithographie- rendaient l'estampe obsolète, le public s'arrachait celle des "Cent aspects de la lune". L'iconographie renvoyait au patrimoine historique, mais l'artiste révolutionnait l'ukiyo-e par sa façon de peindre l'intensité des émotions humaines. Chacune des cent estampes est ici reproduite en fac-similé de l'édition originale. Un livre de commentaires retrace la biographie de Yoshitoshi. Des reproductions complémentaires illustrent sa puissante imagination et l'épanouissement de son style personnel. L'auteur éclaire ensuite l'importance de la série dans l'art japonais de l'estampe, ainsi que les aspects techniques de sa producution. Enfin, les récits des "Cent aspects de la lune" sont détaillés planche par planche.
