Le présent ouvrage vise à cerner au plus près le style qui s'affirme entre 1905 et 1923 et qui a ses propres caractéristiques formelles et thématiques. Rapidement, il sera associé à l'Allemagne qui y voit émerger ses 2 mouvements principaux et fondateurs : la Brücke (le Pont) avec Erich Heckel et Ernst Ludwig Kirchner notamment, et le Blaue Reiter (le Cavalier bleu) avec, entre autres, Wassily Kandinsky et Franz Marc. Toutefois l'expressionnisme se propage également en Autriche mais aussi en Belgique et en France et laissera ses traces au-delà du début du xxe siècle, puisque l'on retrouve bien plus tard aux Etats-Unis l'appellation d'" expressionnisme abstrait " et celle, en Allemagne, de " néo-expressionnisme ". L'ouvrage se propose de retracer l'histoire de ce mouvement en la replaçant dans un contexte artistique en mutation et en mettant en avant les parcours et les oeuvres de ses représentants.
