L'aventure commence au VIIIe siècle av. J.-C. et même bien avant. Le dynamisme et la faculté d'adaptation des Celtes leur permettent, malgré leur turbulence légendaire remarquée par les auteurs antiques, de réussir une première unité culturelle de l'Europe tempérée. De l'Asie Mineure jusque dans les îles Britanniques, leur mouvance a laissé des traces que nous fait découvrir l'archéologie. Guerriers sanguinaires, princes riches et cultivés, femmes de pouvoir, poètes, druides savants, maîtres artisans, tous nous lèguent des témoignages surprenants d'un art raffiné et élaboré qui reflète la complexité de leur société et de leur vie spirituelle. Peu d'architecture et d'œuvres monumentales, mais des milliers d'armes décorées, des vaisselles, des bijoux, des chars de combat, des monnaies nous interpellent par leur graphisme, la profusion de matières nobles - or, bronze, argent, fer, ambre, corail - les créatures fantastiques qui les animent, surtout entre le Ve et le Ier siècle av. J.-C., période d'apogée de l'art des Celtes et de leur extension territoriale. D'abord dirigés par des princes régionaux amoureux d'or, de vin, de richesses, qui, de Suisse, de Bourgogne, d'Allemagne du Sud, gouvernent jalousement et avec convoitise des trafics commerciaux avec les voisins méditerranéens, les Celtes lancent ensuite d'audacieuses campagnes de conquêtes jusqu'en Italie : les Romains se souviendront longtemps du sac de Rome en 386 avant notre ère. Loin de leurs grands fiefs de Champagne, du Bassin parisien, de Rhénanie, de Sarre et de Bohême, ils se mettent en route vers les Balkans et la Grèce - avec pour objectif l'attaque et le pillage du trésor de Delphes -, puis se lancent à l'autre extrémité de l'Europe, à l'assaut cette fois pacifique des îles Britanniques qui seront leur ultime refuge. Aux IIe et Ier siècles av. J.-C., en effet, le territoire des Celtes ne fera que se réduire sous la pression des armées romaines et des Germains. Sur le continent, les Gaulois, avant d'être complètement romanisés, donneront un visage à leurs dieux et Vercingétorix sera l'un des derniers héros de la Gaule libre. Grâce à la main et au génie des moines lettrés d'Irlande, l'art celte sera conservé dans les manuscrits et leurs enluminures, véritables joyaux d'un art du détail qui leur est unique. C'est l'héritage des mille ans d'histoire de ce monde des Celtes, puissante " civilisation barbare " constituée à l'âge du fer et qui finit par se fondre dans l'art de l'Europe chrétienne, que la présente synthèse propose de découvrir.
