En 2003 est entré au Musée national d'art moderne un ensemble unique au monde : un pan de la collection d'André Breton exposé sur l'un des murs de son atelier du 42 rue Fontaine à Paris, ce lieu où le poète et fondateur du surréalisme vécut et anima ce mouvement artistique et littéraire décisif du XXe siècle durant plus de quarante années. Les objets du "Mur Breton" sont issus de cultures et d'aires géographiques variées : Océanie, Amériques, art populaire et art moderne européens (parmi lesquels des oeuvres remarquables du Douanier Rousseau, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Francis Picabia, Valentine Hugo ou Jean Degottex). Le "Mur Breton" a fait l'objet en 1960 d'une célèbre campagne photographique par Sabine Weiss. Cet ouvrage, publié pour coïncider avec le Centenaire du surréalisme en 2024, donne toute sa mesure à cet objet-monde exceptionnel, véritable musée au sein du musée. Par des contributions scientifiques internationales et la mobilisation d'expertises aussi nombreuses que les domaines convoqués par la collection d'André Breton, l'enjeu est bien ici d'étudier pour la première fois, sous forme de catalogue raisonné, l'intégralité des objets qui composent ce Mur et le bureau du poète. Un versant plus spéculatif vise enfin à penser des questions à la fois historiques, anthropologiques et muséales proprement contemporaines, tout en contribuant de manière décisive à ce pan inédit du surréalisme.
