Description
Le parcours d'André Devambez (1877-1944) est celui d'un artiste parisien faisant carrière à la fin du XIXe siècle. Fils du fondateur de la Maison Devambez - entreprise de gravure et d'édition de livres d'art -, formé à l'Ecole des beaux-arts de Paris au sein notamment de l'atelier de peinture de Benjamin-Constant, il obtient le prix de Rome en 1890, puis devient peintre officiel du ministère de l'Air en 1934 et chef d'atelier aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, entre 1929 et 1937. Peintre d'histoire, dessinateur, graveur, mais aussi illustrateur jeunesse et auteur de "Tout-Petits", André Devambez croque avec réalisme le Paris des marges et des Expositions universelles, témoignant avec enthousiasme du mouvement de la vie moderne - celle de l'aéroplane, du cinématographe ou du téléphone. Au tournant de la Belle Epoque, cet inlassable observateur traite avec verve de sujets réalistes ou fantaisistes sous un angle inattendu, livrant, selon l'historien et critique d'art Arsène Alexandre, "un spectacle extrêmement vivant et toujours imprévu, bien qu'il soit emprunté à la réalité la plus stricte". Ainsi, "Devambez fait non seulement du fantastique avec le réel, mais il fait aussi du réel avec le fantastique".
