Depuis l'édition originale en 1978, ce titre fondamental a été régulièrement réimprimé, pour répondre au succès jamais démenti (1984, 1990, 2000, 2002, 2005...). La précédente édition date de 2011. Consacré aux termes de la sculpture, domaine souvent méconnu ou superficiellement connu, ce vocabulaire met en évidence l'apport des traités et des études techniques qui sont demeurés inchangés jusqu'au XIXe siècle. Ce sont tous les procédés liés au moulage, au modelage, à la taille, à la fonte, aux stades de la création et à la composition, les exemplaires authentiques, les copies, les moulages ou les réductions qui sont expliqués et exposés dans un ordre méthodique rigoureux. Toutes les opérations successives de mise en forme et de décor sont analysées, décrites, illustrées et choisies de manière à répertorier tous les procédés utilisés aux diverses époques, sans prétendre constituer une histoire de la sculpture. Comme l'écrivait alors l'historien d'art André Chastel : "Cet instrument de travail est sans équivalent sur le plan international".
