Ce qui est en jeu, dans le présent ouvrage, est la réévaluation des formes et des concepts de l'architecture et de la création artistique au Moyen Age. Durant cette période de profondes restructurations politiques et religieuses, c'est dans un langage architectural que se traduit la métamorphose des sociétés européennes. Le vocabulaire de l'architecture se propage alors sur toutes sortes de matériaux et de supports, mais aussi à des échelles différentes, à la faveur d'échanges et de transferts toujours plus nombreux entre les édifices, les décors monumentaux et les objets usuels ou de dévotion. Ce phénomène "d'architecturation" brouille peu à peu les limites entre architecture, image et artefact, et renouvelle les modes d'adresse aux spectateurs ainsi que le répertoire symbolique du mystère, de l'autorité et de l'intériorité. Les essais ici réunis explorent les procédés techniques et rhétoriques de la microarchitecture médiévale dans son acception la plus large. En ressaisissant le lien dialectique qui articule miniature et gigantisme dans la pensée médiévale, ils renouvellent en profondeur la pensée des notions modernes et contemporaines d'échelle, de valeur et de sublime.
