Les images ont, depuis quelques décennies, acquis droit de cité parmi les documents qui apportent leur contribution à la compréhension des sociétés de l'Occident médiéval. Cependant, la tâche n'a rien d'aisée, car l'analyse des oeuvres visuelles confronte à des difficultés particulières et les historiens, surtout familiers des textes et des matériaux archéologiques, ne sont pas forcément bien armés pour les étudier, dans le respect de leurs modes d'expression et de fonctionnement propres. Destiné à la fois aux historiens et historiens de l'art, ce volume se veut, selon l'esprit de la collection, une introduction et une aide concrète, susceptible d'accompagner pas à pas les étudiants, les jeunes chercheurs et tous les passionnés d'art médiéval, qui souhaitent comprendre les images du Moyen Age (miniatures, sculptures, mobilier, vitrail, retables, peintures murales, etc.) et appréhender leur rôle au sein de la société. Cet ouvrage est réalisé par une quarantaine d'auteurs internationaux (France, Belgique, Italie, Brésil, Corée, Etats-Unis, Pays-Bas, Allemagne, Roumanie, Russie), de Michel Pastoureau à Jean Wirth, de Claudia Rabel à Cristina Pereira, collaborateurs, anciens étudiants ou collègues proches de Jean-Claude Schmitt, directeur d'études à l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), qui a renouvelé l'approche des images médiévales et à qui est dédié cet ouvrage.
