Description

Autism in America: One Woman’s Search for Healing (A Trauma-Informed Guide to Systemic Oppression) by Isha Sarah Snow What if autism isn’t a disorder, but a mirror reflecting the discordant fractures in our civilization? Isha Sarah Snow's first book, Autism in America: One Woman’s Search For Healing (A Trauma Informed Guide to Systemic Oppression) reframes autism using a positive strength based lens as a normative form of human neurology that acts as a "cultural mirror" reflecting societal dysfunctions. The book is a collection of essays and original research drawing on sociological, anthropological and psychological studies, personal testimony, as well as obtained directly from the local Chinook Indian Nation whose lands they currently reside on. They critique systems that pathologize differences, and offer pathways toward collective healing through relational integrity. Key concepts introduced include relating the science of sociology to the vagus nerve and creating multiple trauma informed social theories such as Autistic Standpoint Theory, which offers a framework for understanding autistic experiences from their own unique perspectives, and Functional Conflict Perspective (FCP), a social theory which views conflict as a necessary driver for social evolution and healing when integrated directly and relationally. The book also introduces Mirror Integration Theory (MIT) as a self-inquiry method that uses social interactions and awareness of self projections and recurring patterns as reflections and tools for both personal and systemic healing and growth. The book proposes that a "Collective Nervous System" framework explains how societal trauma and dysregulation impact both individual and collective well-being, evidenced in Snow’s multiple references to various systems theories. Inside These Pages: Autism as a Cultural Mirror — Why neurodivergence reveals the emotional wounds of industrial civilization. The Legacy of Eugenics and Colonialism — How psychiatry and education perpetuate systemic oppression. Functional Conflict Perspective (FCP) — A new paradigm where conflict becomes a tool for social healing. Mirror Integration Theory (MIT) — How individual and societal dysfunctions reflect and recreate each other. Decolonizing Psychiatry and Education — Restoring relational humanity through nervous system health and trauma-informed governance. Autistic Standpoint Theory — Centering neurodivergent perspectives as a form of epistemic justice and cultural repair. Written with fierce honesty, academic precision, and spiritual insight, Autism in America is both an act of resistance and an invitation to remember who we are; not as isolated individuals, but as a collective nervous system capable of repair, empathy, and love. If you’ve ever felt misunderstood, silenced, or pathologized for your sensitivity, this book offers both language and liberation. About the Author Drawing from her lived experience as a late-diagnosed autistic woman and her studies in psychology, sociology, and anthropology at Washington State University, Snow integrates Indigenous wisdom, polyvagal theory, and social science into a unified framework for healing. Her work reframes neurodivergence as ecological intelligence and an evolutionary response to relational fields and social climates, calling humanity back toward relational balance, empathy, and unity. Half of the proceeds of every Kindle and paperback book sold through Amazon.com will be donated directly to the Lenape Nation (https://www.lenape-nation.org/) and the Chinook Indian Nation (https://chinooknation.org/) to support their indigenous tribal restoration efforts.
